Play chess!
by Ofek Krayevsky
Chess is a game of thought and strategy. In the game two opponents sit on opposite sides of a chessboard. Many people claim that chess and checkers are very similar. This is wrong. The only similarities between chess and checkers are that the same board is used in both games and that in both games some of the pieces can move diagonally or straight at different times. Chess is like a game of war: The pawns and the knights defend the king, the rooks kill the trespassers in their territory, the king and the queen are rulers and when you kill the king you win the game. This is called "checkmate".
The game of chess was invented in China in the second century BCE by Andre Fildoor. Chess began to spread around the world and the rules of the game changed: About 1,200 CE chess reached Europe and about 1,475 the rules began to change. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, chess was known throughout the world. The first chess competition was held in 1851 and so, chess became a sport. Today we have websites that specialize in chess and chess masters that can help you.
The chessboard is a square board with eight squares in each line and each column; in all, 64 squares. In chess there are two sets of opponents, the white team and the black team. Each side has 16 pieces: two rooks, two bishops, two knights, the queen, the king and eight pawns. In all, there are 32 pieces. According the rules, the player with the white pieces has the first move.
There are eight pawns. The pawn is the least important piece and it is positioned on the first line, before all the other pieces. It always moves first. The pawn can move either one or two squares, and take the enemy piece diagonally. When the pawn reaches the last square on its opponent's side, it is exchanged for another piece of its own side that has been taken.

There are two bishops. They stand between the knight and the queen or the king. But the bishop has many advantages: It moves only diagonally but until it comes to the end of the opponent's side.It can check the king even in its first move. In many moves, it has a chance to checkmate.
There is the queen - the queen is positioned between the king and the bishop. The Queen is the key of the game. It moves on all of the squares. It can take the king in many moves.
